*Call to Worship                                                            Psalm 103:13–18

Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.

For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.

As for man, his days are like grass;

As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,

And its place acknowledges it no longer.

But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,

And His righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep His covenant and remember His precepts to do them.

  Public Confession

Heavenly Father, we confess that we have not always demonstrated the truth of our calling as saints in our words and deeds. We have not spoken with grace, as we are commanded. We have not kept our minds pure. We have not shown sufficient concern for Your Word. We have allowed many things to distract us from our pursuit of holiness.

For all these things, we ask forgiveness. For all our weaknesses, we ask for strength.

Words of Assurance                                                    Colossians 3:4-7

When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.

*Declaring Our Faith                                 The Larger Catechism (194)#

What do we pray for in the fifth petition?

In the fifth petition (which is: Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors), we pray for ourselves and others that God of His free grace would, through the obedience and satisfaction of Christ, apprehended and applied by faith, acquit us both from the guilt and punishment of sin, accept us in His Beloved, continue His favor and grace to us, pardon our daily failings, and fill us with peace and joy, in giving us daily more and more assurance of forgiveness; which we are encouraged to ask, and encouraged to expect, when we from the heart forgive others their offenses.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                               Proverbs 29:14-27

If a king judges the poor with truth, his throne will be established forever.

The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.

When the wicked increase, transgression increases;

But the righteous will see their fall.

Correct your son, and he will give you comfort;

He will also delight your soul.

Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained,

But happy is he who keeps the law.

A slave will not be instructed by words alone;

For though he understands, there will be no response.

Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

He who pampers his slave from childhood will in the end find him to be a son.

An angry man stirs up strife,

And a hot-tempered man abounds in transgression.

A man’s pride will bring him low,

But a humble spirit will obtain honor.

He who is a partner with a thief hates his own life;

He hears the oath but tells nothing.

The fear of man brings a snare,

But he who trusts in the Lord will be exalted.

Many seek the ruler’s favor,

But justice for man comes from the Lord.

An unjust man is abominable to the righteous,

And he who is upright in the way is abominable to the wicked.
