The Lord’s Day

February 14, 2010

Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You.

(Psalm 67:5)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 125

Those who trust in the Lord are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land of the righteous, so that the righteous will not put forth their hands to do wrong.

Do good, O Lord, to those who are good and to those who are upright in their hearts.

But as for those who turn aside to their crooked ways, the Lord will lead them away with the doers of iniquity.

Peace be upon Israel.

Public Confession

Heavenly Father, please cause us to be grieved by our sin, but confident in Your unfailing promise of pardon. We confess that we have sinned in our speech and thoughts. We ask that You would forgive us and cause us to speak words of truth only and dwell on that which is pure. We have sinned in our neglect of responsibilities. Again, we ask for forgiveness and diligence in pursuit of righteousness.

Words of Assurance           Romans 3:21-24

But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   The Catechism of the Church in Geneva

Is Christ’s crucifixion upon the cross of particular significance, or could He have been executed in some other way?

Paul says that Christ hung upon a tree to take our curse upon Himself and free us from it. For that kind of death was itself cursed.

Is not an affront put upon the Son of God when the Scripture says that He was cursed even in the eyes of God?

By no means; since by being cursed He abolished it, and yet He did not cease to be blessed in order that He might bring that blessedness to us.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading  Psalm 24

The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains,

The world, and those who dwell in it.

For He has founded it upon the seas

And established it upon the rivers.

Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?

And who may stand in His holy place?

He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood

And has not sworn deceitfully.

He shall receive a blessing from the Lord

And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

This is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face—even Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O ancient doors,

That the King of glory may come in!

Who is the King of glory?

The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O gates, and lift them up, O ancient doors,

That the King of glory may come in!

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.
