The Lord’s Day

February 21, 2010

The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God, blesses us.

God blesses us, that all the ends of the earth may fear Him.

(Psalm 67:6, 7)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship                                                   Psalm 138:6–8

For though the Lord is exalted, yet He regards the lowly, but the haughty He knows from afar.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;

You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,

And Your right hand will save me.

The Lord will accomplish what concerns me; Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;

Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

Public Confession

O God, forgive us for straying from the path of righteousness. Forgive us for using our words to tear down, rather than to build up. Help us to develop more patience and charity. And please forgive us for our lack of compassion and kindness. Enable us to imitate our Savior in these matters.

Words of Assurance                                             Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]   The Catechism of the Church in Geneva

Why did Christ allow His body to be put in a tomb like other men?

He allowed His body to be put in a tomb to make more manifest that He underwent a real death.

Since the Son of God endured the sentence of death, which had been imposed upon us, why do we still die?

Because of what our Savior did, death is no longer to be dreaded as if it were a fearful thing. For us, death is not an obstacle any longer, but a passage to heaven.

  Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading                                              Psalm 25:1–10

To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

O my God, in You I trust,

Do not let me be ashamed;

Do not let my enemies exult over me.

Indeed, none of those who wait for You will be ashamed;

Those who deal treacherously without cause will be ashamed.

Make me know Your ways, O Lord;

Teach me Your paths.

Lead me in Your truth and teach me,

For You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all the day.

Remember, O Lord, Your compassion and Your lovingkindnesses,

For they have been from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;

According to Your lovingkindness remember me, for Your goodness’ sake, O Lord.

Good and upright is the Lord;

Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.

He leads the humble in justice, and He teaches the humble His way.

All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.
