The Lord’s Day
July 27, 2008
As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people
from this time forth and forever.
(Psalm 125:2)
Prelude
Apostolic Greeting
*Call to Worship Psalm 99:1-3
The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble;
He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!
The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is exalted above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your great and awesome name;
Holy is He.

Public Confession
We come before You, O God, with thankful hearts. On Your grace alone we depend. Forgive us for unholy thoughts and words. Enable us to guard our hearts against unwholesome thoughts, and cause us to speak words that truly instruct and encourage. And forgive us for thinking too little of Your Word this past week. Cause us to hunger after Your Word so that it might guide every step we take. And finally, please forgive us for being too proud while trusting in ourselves. Give us a spirit of humility and service.
Words of Assurance Romans 15:5-7
Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.

What do we pray for in the third petition?
In the third petition (which is: Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven), acknowledging that by nature we and all men are not only utterly unable and unwilling to know and do the will of God, but prone to rebel against His Word, to murmur against His providence, and wholly inclined to do the will of the flesh and of the devil, we pray that God would by His Spirit take away from ourselves and others all blindness, weakness, and perverseness of heart; and by His grace make us able and willing to know, do, and submit to His will in all things, with the like humility, cheerfulness, faithfulness, diligence, zeal, sincerity, and constancy as the angels do in heaven.
Pastoral Prayer
*Responsive Reading Proverbs 29:1-13
A man who hardens his neck after much reproof will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.
When the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
But when a wicked man rules, people groan.
A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad,
But he who keeps company with harlots wastes his wealth.
The king gives stability to the land by justice,
But a man who takes bribes overthrows it.
A man who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his steps.
By transgression an evil man is ensnared,
But the righteous sings and rejoices.
The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor,
The wicked does not understand such concern.
Scorners set a city aflame,
But wise men turn away anger.
When a wise man has a controversy with a foolish man, the foolish man either rages or laughs,
And there is no rest.
Men of bloodshed hate the blameless,
But the upright are concerned for his life.
A fool always loses his temper,
But a wise man holds it back.
If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, all his ministers become wicked.
The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: the Lord gives light to the eyes of both.
