The Lord’s Day

May 30, 2010

Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God! For You have smitten all my enemies on the cheek;

You have shattered the teeth of the wicked.

(Psalm 3:7)

Prelude

Apostolic Greeting

*Call to Worship Psalm 112:1–3

Praise the Lord!

How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments.

His descendants will be mighty on earth;

The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in his house,

And his righteousness endures forever.

Public Confession

Forgive the sins of our minds and speech, heavenly Father. Fill our hearts with purity and our mouths with praise. Forgive our sins of complacency. Make us people of overflowing compassion. Forgive us for doubting You and wondering, at times, about the path You have ordained for us.

Words of Assurance           Psalm 5:11, 12

Let all who take refuge in You be glad, let them ever sing for joy; and may You shelter them, that those who love Your name may exult in You. For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord, You surround him with favor as with a shield.

*Declaring Our Faith[†]      Fisher’s Catechism

The third question of the Shorter Catechism says that the Scriptures primarily teach us what to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of us. What, therefore, does it mean to believe the Scriptures?

To believe is to assent to the truths in the Bible, recognizing that it is authoritative because it is the Word of God.

What is the foundation for our duty?

Faith or believing is the foundation of duty, or obedience.

What is the relationship between our duty and the gospel?

The promise of the gospel is to be believed; our obedience to the law follows our faith and expresses our gratitude and love.

Pastoral Prayer

*Responsive Reading  Psalm 86:1-10

Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me;

For I am afflicted and needy.

Preserve my soul, for I am a godly man;

O You my God, save Your servant who trusts in You.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to You I cry all day long.

Make glad the soul of Your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive,

And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;

And give heed to the voice of my supplications!

In the day of my trouble I shall call upon You, for You will answer me.

There is no one like You among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like Yours.

All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,

And they shall glorify Your name.

For You are great and do wondrous deeds;

You alone are God.
